Why Is Prophet Ibrahim (عليه السلام) Mentioned in Durood-e-Ibrahim?
Islamic scholars have offered multiple theological and historical explanations for the distinctive mention of Prophet Ibrahim (عليه السلام) in al-Salat al-Ibrahimiyyah. These explanations collectively demonstrate his exceptional status, his relationship with the Ummah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and the divine wisdom behind this inclusion.
Divine Recompense for His Greetings to the Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ
One of the most prominent scholarly explanations is that Prophet Ibrahim’s mention in this supplication represents a divine reward for the salutations and goodwill he expressed toward the Ummah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ during the event of al-Isrāʾ wa-l-Miʿrāj (The Night Journey and Ascension).
This is established through an authentic narration reported by ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd رضي الله عنه, who stated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
(“I met Ibrahim on the night of my Ascension, and he said: ‘O Muhammad, convey my greetings to your Ummah and inform them that Paradise has fertile soil and sweet water, and that its plants are grown by saying: SubḥānAllāh, Al-ḥamdu lillāh, Lā ilāha illā Allāh, and Allāhu Akbar.’”)
— Sunan al-Tirmidhī
Imam al-Ṭabarānī records an additional wording that includes:
«وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ»
(“There is no power nor might except with Allah.”)
Because Prophet Ibrahim (عليه السلام) expressed sincere concern, blessings, and guidance for the Ummah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Allah honored him by granting perpetual remembrance within the daily prayers of this Ummah. Thus, in Durood-e-Ibrahim, believers send blessings not only upon Prophet Muhammad ﷺ but also upon Prophet Ibrahim, ensuring his name is remembered in every ṣalāh until the end of time.
Through the daily recitation of Durood-e-Ibrahim, believers seek both blessings and guidance from Allah.
This reflects divine justice and reciprocity: Ibrahim supplicated for the Ummah, and the Ummah supplicates for Ibrahim.
Prophet Ibrahim’s Supplication for the Coming of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
Another foundational reason for Prophet Ibrahim’s mention is his direct supplication for the advent of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his community. Allah records this prayer in the Qur’an:
The prayer Durood-e-Ibrahim encapsulates the essence of devotion and respect towards the prophets.
“Our Lord, send among them a Messenger from themselves who will recite to them Your verses, teach them the Book and wisdom, and purify them. Indeed, You are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.”
(Surah al-Baqarah 2:129)
This supplication was fulfilled with the sending of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as the final Messenger. Accordingly, the Prophet ﷺ stated:
«أَنَا دَعْوَةُ أَبِي إِبْرَاهِيمَ»
“I am the answer to my father Ibrahim’s supplication.”
— Musnad Aḥmad; Sunan al-Bayhaqī
Given that Prophet Ibrahim prayed explicitly for the coming of the Prophet ﷺ and his Ummah, it is only fitting that the Ummah reciprocates by invoking blessings upon him in every prayer.
Prophet Ibrahim Named the Ummah “Muslims”
The Qur’an affirms that Prophet Ibrahim (عليه السلام) was the one who named this Ummah “Muslims”:
هُوَ سَمَّاكُمُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ مِن قَبْلُ
“He named you Muslims previously.”
(Surah al-Ḥajj 22:78)
This refers to the supplication of Prophet Ibrahim:
رَبَّنَا وَاجْعَلْنَا مُسْلِمَيْنِ لَكَ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِنَا أُمَّةً مُّسْلِمَةً لَّكَ
“Our Lord, make us Muslims in submission to You, and from our descendants a Muslim nation submitted to You.”
(Surah al-Baqarah 2:128)
Since the Arabs—and specifically the lineage of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ—descend from Prophet Ismāʿīl (عليه السلام), this establishes a profound genealogical and spiritual connection. Thus, Prophet Ibrahim’s inclusion in Durood-e-Ibrahim honors his role as the spiritual father of the Muslim Ummah.
The Qur’an further reinforces this status:
مِلَّةَ أَبِيكُمْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ
“The way of your father Ibrahim.”
(Surah al-Ḥajj 22:78)
The Unique Status of Prophet Ibrahim as Khalīlullāh
Prophet Ibrahim holds the distinguished title of Khalīlullāh (the Intimate Friend of Allah). Allah explicitly states:
“And Allah took Ibrahim as an intimate friend.”
(Surah an-Nisāʾ 4:125)
This rank is shared only with Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who was granted an even higher distinction as Ḥabībullāh (the Beloved of Allah).
